Be it a broken antenna, defective cables, poor sound or snowy picture, every time the television conks out, you face the chore of calling a repairman to fix it, set up a time, follow up and make your purse lighter in the process. There are a few television repair tricks, however; knowing them can help save you time, effort and worry.
Cables
The copper coaxial cable, or the long wire attached with a screw to the back of your TV set, connects your television to the community antenna managed by your cable service provider. Problems with this wire can lead to poor picture quality. Before calling a professional to fix your TV's picture, reach behind the set and wiggle this cable around to see if the picture gets better. If not, the next step would be to get a new cable or a new metal fitting for the cable that connects the cable to the TV.
Antenna
Fuzzy quality of pictures, generally with old TV sets, is often due to an antenna issue. For resolving this, unscrew the antenna from its base and remove it. Buy a new one from the store, asking the salespeople for guidance regarding the right one for your TV model. While installing the new one, make certain the washers and spacers are held tight. While screwing in at the base, provide a firm grip such that it is not too tight or too loose. The antenna should not topple over nor should it be unable to move.
TV Screen
Bad pictures can sometimes be caused by magnetization of the television screen itself. This becomes a problem when the set's built-in automatic demagnetizing feature fails to function. To solve this condition, remove any magnetic substance or object such as a speaker or motor from near the TV screen. Buy a degaussing coil from an electronic supply store. Move the coil in tiny circles a few inches from the screen, starting at the top at any of the corners. The picture will start to rise and fall with the movement of the coil. Slowly move the coil in bigger circles until you are able to cover the whole screen. This will demagnetize your TV screen and reestablish your picture.
Projection and Plasma TVs
You can easily repair your projection TV by replacing voltage-controlling electronic parts such as transistors, resistors and capacitors. These are cheap and easily available. You also do not generally require much technical knowledge to fix these problems. Plasma TVs are, however, more complicated and would possibly require professional help to fix an issue.
