Homemade Ir Camera

Turn your Camera into an IR Camera.

An infrared camera is one that can see into heat signatures even in complete blackness. These devices used to be something that were reserved for spies, or people in the military. However today if you have a cheap digital camera, a piece of used film and some glue you can easily build your own infrared camera.

Instructions

1. Remove the screws from your digital camera using a Philips screwdriver. If your camera does not have screws then you can pry it apart using a flat edge such as an exacto knife or a screwdriver.

2. Locate the CCD (charged couple device). This is the piece of the camera that detects light and is responsible for creating the photograph. The CCD usually sits behind the camera lens. If you can't find it consult your user's manual.

3. Remove the infrared (IR) filter. This is a piece of glass or plastic that is colored red. It will be sitting on top of the CCD and needs to be gently pried off. You can use a flat head screwdriver to do this.

4. Place the black negative pieces on top of the CCD where the IR filter was. You will need to apply a bit of non-toxic glue to the film to make it stick to the CCD.

5. Replace the CCD and put the camera back together replacing the screws.

6. Take photos of an animal or person in a darkened room. The photos that come out will not look like the ones that you are used to, but will instead show shades of green, red, yellow and orange where the people or animals are.
