In the age of computers, the need for electric typewriters has nearly vanished. They are still used in banks and law offices for items that need carbon copies, or for data entry on specific forms. If you're unfamiliar with electric typewriters, changing the ribbon may seem daunting. However, the process is easier than changing the ink on many modern computer printers.
Instructions
1. Turn the typewriter off. Make sure that the ribbon is compatible with your model by comparing the model number on the typewriter with the information on the ribbon's box.
2. Center the typewriter carriage.
3. Open the cover or top flap that sits over the type basket (the set of rods that strike the paper when a key is hit).
4. Remove the old ribbon by pulling it up from the spools. If your model has a latch holding the ribbon in place, open it to release the ribbon before pulling it from the spools.
5. Remove the new ribbon from its box. Hold the two components about 1 inch apart, exposing part of the ribbon.
6. Face the ribbon away from you as you place the right end on the spool.
7. Pull the ribbon across to the left, making sure the ribbon slides in the metal slot where the typefaces strike. Stretch the ribbon until you can secure it to the left spool.
8. Wind the left spool several times to loosen the ribbon and allow for ease of movement.
9. Replace the lid, insert paper and turn the typewriter on to test the ribbon. Make sure the ribbon does not bunch, rip or move out of the center slot.
