Charge A Camera

Your camera is only as good as the strength of its battery.

Keeping the battery charged on your digital camera ensures that you won't miss that once-in-a-lifetime grab shot. Whether you are birding on a cold spring morning or capturing a kickflip at a skateboard park, a dead or dying battery equals a lost opportunity. A fully charged battery is as important as the right lens.

Instructions

1. Charge a new battery fully before using it. Check the battery level in your camera by locating the battery icon on the camera display. This is usually a rectangular battery symbol on its side and will be solid when the battery is fully charged. A partially-filled icon indicates that the battery is running low and an empty icon or a flashing one means it is time to charge the battery.

2. Locate the battery compartment on your camera, slide back or flip open the cover and unlock the battery. A small button or lever can be depressed to release the battery so you can remove it from the camera.

3. Insert the battery into the charger that came with your camera, lining it up with the grooves in the charger. Listen for a click that tells you it has connected. In the absence of a click, just be sure the battery is completely inserted in the charger.

4. Flip the charger's prongs to open and insert them into a power outlet. Or connect the power cord to the charger and then to the outlet. The charger may display an orange or red light to indicate that the battery is charging.

5. Follow manufacturer's instructions for timing the charge. Most battery chargers will display a green light when the battery is fully charged in about two hours. Do not charge for more than 24 hours straight. Overcharging will degrade your battery.

6. Remove the battery from the charger. Replace it in the camera, making sure to click or slide the compartment completely closed. Recheck the battery levels on the camera's display panel.

7. Remove the battery charger from the power source and store it where you keep your camera accessories.
