Diy Canvas Camera Bag

A camera lens is more sensitive to shock than the camera itself.

Camera lenses are notoriously sensitive to being damaged from vibrations or sudden impact. To protect your digital or conventional camera lenses, make a canvas bag into a padded camera bag. The Do-It-Yourself (DIY) project requires a few tools that most homes already have on hand, along with supplies from a hardware store. No special skills are needed.

Instructions

1. Place the canvas bag that will become a camera bag face down on a table. Measure the length and width of the bottom with a tape measure. Write the measurements down. Return the canvas bag right side up and place it horizontally on the table.

2. Place a piece of foam rubber on the table. Cut out a rectangle that matches the length and width of the measurements taken with a straightedge and utility knife, minus an inch on each measurement. Place the cut rectangle that is now the bottom piece aside.

3. Place your camera face down on the table. Measure the height and width of the camera. Write the measurements down.

4. Place one of the camera lenses on the table face down. Measure the height and width of the lens and write the measurements down.

5. Cut a rectangle out of the foam rubber that matches the measurements for height but double the width of the camera with the straightedge and the utility knife. Place the camera rectangle aside.

6. Cut a rectangle out of the foam rubber that matches the measurements for the lens with the straightedge and the utility knife. Cut an additional four rectangles to the same measurements. Place the lens rectangles aside.

7. Place the bottom piece on the table horizontally. Place the camera face down on the bottom piece about an inch in from the right side and centered between the two ends. Draw a circle around the front of the camera on the bottom piece with a grease pencil. Place the camera aside.

8. Place a lens face down on the bottom piece 2 inches from the circle drawn and an inch from the side closest to you. Draw a circle around the front of the lens with the grease pencil. Place the lens face down on the bottom piece 2 inches from the camera circle and an inch in from the side farthest from you. Draw a circle around the front of the lens with the grease pencil.

9. Measure 2 inches across from the circle just drawn. Place the lens down and draw another circle on the bottom piece. Place a line of bonding glue down the width of the bottom piece to the left of the camera circle.

10. Place the cut camera rectangle vertically to the left of the camera circle. Press the rectangle against the bottom piece and hold it there for a minute before letting go.

11. Place a line of bonding glue at the left and right sides of the two camera circles on the bottom piece farthest from you. Place a cut lens rectangle vertically against the sides of the lens' circles. Press the rectangles against the bottom piece and hold them there for a minute before letting go.

12. Place a line of bonding glue at the left and right sides of the camera circles on the bottom piece closest to you. Place a cut lens rectangle vertically against the sides of the circle. Press the rectangles against the bottom piece and hold them there for a minute before letting go. Let the glue set overnight.

13. Turn the bottom piece over. Run a line of bonding glue along the top, bottom and sides of the piece. Make an "X" at the center of the bottom piece with the bonding glue.

14. Turn the bottom piece over. Insert the bottom piece horizontally into the canvas bag. Line up the edges of the bottom piece with the inside corners of the bag. Press the bottom piece against the bag and hold it there for two minutes. Let the glue set overnight.

15. Place the camera into the camera space in the bag. Place each of the three lenses into the spaces for the lenses inside the bag. Place other camera accessories inside the bag.
