Adjusting a scope on a bolt action rifle is relatively easy, but requires a couple of extra steps in comparison to other rifles due to the position of the bolt handle. By making these adjustments, you will increase your accuracy and consistency both in the field and on the target range.
Instructions
Adjust a Bolt Action Rifle Scope
1. Position the scope on the bolt action rifle so that it will not interfere with the action of the bolt handle. If you find it more difficult to mount the rifle scope with the bolt handle in place, simply remove the bolt handle and replace it after the scope has been properly mounted and adjusted.
2. Align the scope with the bolt action rifle by using the boresighting technique. With this technique, you simply focus on a fixed object 40 to 50 feet from you, first through the bore (barrel), and then through the scope. Place the rifle firmly on a stationary surface and take care not to move the rifle during the process. Adjust the scope until you are able to center the object equally between the sights of the rifle and the crosshairs of the scope.
3. Replace the bolt handle, if necessary, after you have used the boresighting technique. Again, make sure the action of the handle in no way interferes with the rifle scope.
4. Take a few practice shots to determine how accurate your scope is in relation to the bolt action rifle. As always, make sure the gun is always pointed in a safe direction, away from others. Concentrate on grouping your shots closely together, which is the best way to find out if your sights are misaligned.
5. Make adjustments to your rifle scope, depending upon the type of scope you are using. In most cases, you will be fine-tuning the alignment of the scope through the use of two knobs that move the scope horizontally and vertically, with each click representing fractions of an inch, until you are able to hit your target consistently.
