Imagine sitting back in your recliner, switching on the TV, turning on the DVD player, activating surround sound and enjoying your favorite movie all while using just one remote. Sounds pretty unreal, right? It certainly does if you're currently using a separate remote for each component. If so, consider getting a universal remote to control all of your electronics with one simple device. Here's a look at Zenith Universal Remotes.
Function
Zenith's universal remotes are designed to consolidate the several remote controls that go along with electronic devices such as televisions, DVD players, DVRs, audio systems and cable boxes. They can also serve to replace a lost or broken remote control. The remotes feature a variety of inputs for these various devices, allowing you to seamlessly push a button and switch operation between devices.
Models
Though the function and design is largely similar, Zenith has a number of individual universal remote models. Newer models include the ZEN series (ZEN 100, 300, 350, 400, 425, 450, 525, 550, 700, 725, 760 ZENDTV and ZENGM2). Other series include the CL and MBC.
Layout
The remote's specific layout will vary by model, but generally Zenith remotes include a power button in the upper right hand corner, a basic four-button volume/channel tuning, a 10-digit numerical layout, a recall function, TV/VCR/cable buttons and auxiliary (AUX) buttons for other devices. Remotes also feature video/audio functions such as play, fast forward and rewind.
Programming
Programming universal remotes can often be a difficult task. Here's the basic programming instructions for Zenith remotes:
1. Turn on the component that you want to sync with the remote.
2. Hold down the "Code Search" button until the LED light turns on.
3. Press the button for the component you're programming (the indicator light will flash and then stay lit).
4. Enter the code for the specific make/model found in the user's manual (link to manual below).
5. The light should turn off.
6. Try operating the device using various function buttons to make sure that it works.
7. If the remote is not working, try additional codes for the manufacturer of the device.
Code Search
Code not listed in the manual? Tried all options, but still can't get it working? If you're having trouble, you can also try searching for the code. Here's how:
1. Repeat steps 1 through 3 from Section 4.
2. Hit the "Power" button repeatedly to scroll through codes until the television shuts off. (Note: If you accidentally skip a code, you can go back using the "Down Channel" button). This may take up to 300 presses.
3. Press "Mute" to finish the process.
If you never want to have to do this again, identify and record your code as follows:
1. Hold down the "Code Search" button until the light turns on.
2. Hit the button corresponding to the device in question (TV, DVD, etc.) That light will blink.
3. Press the "Code Search" button again. The light will shut off.
3. Press number keys 0 to 9 to find the first code digit. The light will blink off and back on when the correct digit is pressed.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 to find the second digit.
5. Repeat again to find the third digit; however, the light will shut off completely once the correct digit is pressed.
Now be sure to write down the code and put it in a safe place so that you can find it should you need to reprogram.
Considerations
The aforementioned instructions are based on the instruction manual for the ZEN series. Set up and instructions for older Zenith models may differ. Follow the second link for user's manuals for other Zenith models.
